Tomales Bay State Park
Star Route
Inverness CA 94937
Operating hours, seasons: The park is open 8:00 am
to sunset, all year long.
Directions: From Marin on U.S. 101, take the Sir Francis
Drake Boulevard exit. Turn west and drive about 20 miles to the
town of Olema. Turn right on Highway 1 and drive about four miles,
then turn left at Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and drive north
for seven miles to Pierce Point Road. Turn right and drive 1.2
miles to the access road for Tomales Bay State Park. Turn right
and drive 1.5 miles to the park entrance.
Weather, clothing: The weather can change quickly.
Visitors should be prepared by dressing in layers.
Trip notes: Few know of this tiny campground, not even
the many bicyclists touring Highway 1 who are looking for exactly
such a spot. This camp is for hikers and bikers only. The park
is on the secluded western shore of Tomales Bay, pretty, quiet,
and protected from the coastal winds. The park offers good hiking,
picnicking, and, during low tides, clamming (make sure you have
a fishing license). There are several excellent hikes in this
park, including the Johnstone Trail, which ranges from Heart's
Desire Beach to Shell Beach and beyond, and the Indian Nature
Trail.
