Sand Point State Park

Location: County: Sonoma. Nearest City: Guerneville.

Campsites, facilities: There are 109 sites for tents or RVs up to 31 feet long, 20 walk-in tent sites, 10 hike-in/bike-in sites, and one group camp. Picnic tables, fire grills, and piped water are provided. Flush and pit toilets and a sanitary disposal station are available. The picnic areas and some hiking trails are wheelchair accessible. Leashed pets are permitted, except on trails.

Reservations, fees: Reserve by phoning 1-800-444-PARK/7275 ($7.50 reservation fee); $5-$16 per night. Open year-round.

Directions: From Santa Rosa on U.S. 101, turn west on Highway 12 (it becomes Highway 116 at Forestville) and drive to Highway 1 at Jenner. Turn north on Highway 1 and drive about 20 miles to the park entrance at Gerstle Cove.

Weather, clothing: The weather can be changeable; layered clothing is recommended.

Trip notes: This is a gorgeous piece of Sonoma coast, highlighted by Fisk Mill Cove, inshore kelp beds, outstanding short hikes, and abalone diving. Great hikes include the Bluff Trail and Stump Beach Trail (great views but crowded). During abalone season, this is one of the best and most popular spots on the Northern California coast. Camp reservations are advised.
