along Highway One.
Weather, clothing: The weather changes quickly. Prepare
for cold and windy weather, even in summer. It is recommended
that you wear comfortable walking shoes.
Trip notes: Point Sur State Historic Park with an active
US Coast Guard lightstation, sits 361 feet above the surf on
a large volcanic rock. The facilities were established for the
safety of seagoing vessels moving up and down the Big Sur coast.
First lit on August 1, 1889, it has remained in continuous
operation. Four lighthouse keepers and their families lived
at the site until 1974 when the light station was automated.
Point Sur has been a navigational landmark throughout history
and the nearby coastline has been the site of several renowned
shipwrecks, most notably the US Navy Dirigible MACON in
1935. Point Sur is on the National Register of Historic Places
and is a California State Historic Landmark. today, the buildings
are being restored as a complete turn-of-the-century (1889 -
1929) lightstation. Tours of the facilities are available on
weekends year-round and on Wednesday, seasonally.
Tour Information: Volunteer-led, three-hour walking tours
of approximately 1/2 mile on a road with a 361-ft. rise in elevation.
There are two flights of stairs, the longer has 65 steps.Tour

10 a.m. Wednesdays --- 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

along the west side of Highway 1 at the locked gate 19 miles
south of Rio Road in Carmel and 1/4 mile north of Point Sur Naval
facility. Space is limited -- arrive 30 minutes early. Admission:
