Location: County: Tuolumne. Nearest City: Strawberry.
Campsites, facilities: There are 200 sites for tents
or RVs up to 22 feet long. Piped water, picnic tables, and metal
fire rings with adjustable grills are provided. Vault toilets
are available, and there are two winterized rest rooms with flush
toilets and sinks. A grocery store, a Laundromat, pay showers
(in summer months only), equestrian facilities, a boat ramp,
and propane gas are nearby. Leashed pets are permitted.

($8.65 reservation fee); $14 per night. Open April to October,
weather permitting.

Directions: From Sonora, drive east on Highway 108
for about 25 miles. Turn right at the sign for Pinecrest Lake.
Go about 100 yards past the turnoff for Pinecrest and turn right
on the access road for Pinecrest Camp.
Weather, clothing: Summers can be warm, fall and spring
can be cool. The weather can be changeable; layered clothing
is recommended.
Trip notes: This monster-sized Forest Service camp
is set near Pinecrest Lake. In early summer, there is good fishing
for stocked rainbow trout. A launch ramp is available, and a
20 mph speed limit is enforced on the lake. A trail circles the
lake and also branches off to nearby Catfish Lake. The elevation
is 5,800 feet. Winter camping is allowed near the Pinecrest Day-Use
Area.
