Operating hours, seasons: Guided tours are available on weekdays, 9 a.m to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Call the museum to confirm; open all year round.

Directions: The park is located downtown Sacramento at 10th and L Streets.

Weather, clothing: Summer and spring are warm; fall and winter can be cool. Layered clothing is advised.

Trip notes: Home of the California Legislature since 1869, the building underwent a major renovation that restored much of the Capitol's original look. Many of the original offices including the governor's and secretary of state's, have been completely restored and are open to visitors. There are 40 acres of gardens in the surrounding Capitol Park, including trees from around the world. The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial is also on these grounds. The building features exhibits and tours - and possibly an opportunity to watch the legislators debate and bill or cast a vote.
