Good Turns

Larry Polyak, Scoutmaster
This past weekend, Troop 325 did a Good Turn. We had a great turnout Saturday morning for the spring cleanup day right here at Prince of Peace. I was really happy to see a good number of our older scouts get up a little earlier than they otherwise might and come over to help out - even if it did take Krispy Kreme donuts to entice them! But I think we really made a difference here, in just a few hours.
So now we're done doing our Good Turn for another month or two right? Wrong! The scout slogan of course is to do a Good Turn daily. Daily! That's every day! Not once every month or two. Now.. no one is asking you to go somewhere and help out for hours each day, or to use your First Aid skills to save a life, but doing a Good Turn daily can mean just being kind to others. There are two reasons for doing Good Turns. The first is to make someone else happy, but doing a Good Turns makes us feel happy too. Lord Baden Powell, the founder of Scouting once said "The real way to get happiness is by giving it to other people.". I know that I left here Saturday feeling very happy because of our Good Turn.
Here is a simple thing you can do.. the next time you walk into a store and there is someone coming in behind you, move to the side and hold the door open to let the other person walk in first. Watch their reaction. More often than not, you'll see a smile and a get a thank you. It'll make you feel good too!
Thanks for listening.
