Boy Scout Troop 325
Scoutmaster Minute
Be Prepared
June 10, 2001
George Denise, Scoutmaster
Just two words are required to sum up all that Scouting means to me. Within those two words are all of the aims and goals of Scouting as I understand them. Scouting calls me to be aware of what is happening, to be aware that the skills I have been asked to learn have to be kept sharp and ready so that I can use them, to be aware of my surroundings so I know where I am and where resources may be found. Scouting asks me to be Mentally Awake.
Scouting calls me to be a good leader, a role model, a person of Faith, someone who can be trusted so that when a job has to be done I can be considered without reservation. Scouting asks me to be Morally Straight.
Scouting calls me to be able to use the knowledge I have, to lead young men in the adventures and challenges of the game, to do my share of the labors, and to respond when needed to rescue someone in danger or distress. Scouting asks me to be Physically Strong.
Scouting asks me to Be Prepared, not just while I am in Uniform, but at all times in my life. This is not a destination, it is a path that I must always walk if I am to name myself a Scout. The Three and the Twelve are my map and the Spirit of Scouting is my guide, especially when I become disoriented and have to find my way back. The Summit of the Eagle Peak may have been a goal along the way, but I now realize from its vantage point that it is the path of preparedness that is the most important part of my continuing journey through life. And with the help of the Great Scoutmaster, it is the path I will travel until I go home.
